What is Bola?

Bola is a strategy game played with numbered bowling balls on an outdoor course. Four targets — 1, 2, 3, and Poison — sit about a hundred feet apart in a rough rectangle. Each is a seven-and-a-half-inch disc on a pipe with a bell that rings when you strike it.

Move your bola through the targets in order. Every strike earns a Hit, and a Hit can be spent throwing your bola at an opponent’s — connect, and you pick theirs up and throw it wherever you like. Reach Poison and your bola becomes dangerous: anything it strikes is out of the game and retired to the Bola Graveyard.

The last Bolar remaining wins.

How the championship works

Games run in heats of up to ten Bolars. The winner and the runner-up of each heat advance, and the final game decides the World Champion, who takes home a trophy.

The Tournament Master sets the number of heats before the day, based on how many people have pre-registered. That is the practical reason to register early rather than turn up — the bracket is built from the list.

Who can play

There is no age limit and there are no divisions. Men, women, and children all play in the same game, against each other, at the same time.

The official rules put it about as plainly as it can be put: a contestant doesn’t even have to be able to pick up the bola.

Bolas are provided by the Tournament Master, painted and numbered 1 through 10. You bring nothing.

Entry is free and there is no purse. Players are asked instead to donate whatever they can to the Tri-Cities Food Bank on the day.
